Fairy Chimneys
60 million years ago, a large magma caldera eruption occurred in a large area in central Anatolia, exploding a 600 km² area and bringing up magma with slightly porous tuff and a thin layer of hard basalt rock. After solidification, the upper hard layer fractured, allowing rainwater and wind to penetrate the lower soft layers. Where a piece of the hard basalt cap remained, a column of softer rock protected the underlying layer from water and wind erosion, forming charming structures called Peri Bacası in Turkish, the fairy chimney.
When a hard top hat falls the structure is demolished by erosion but at the same time the process goes on uninterrupted to form new fairy chimneys.
As the soft tuff rock is easily carved, from very early historical ages the area was suitable habitat for people. Later carving below the surface many underground cities were constructed for defence purposes. Escaping from the Roman Empire persecution early Christian believers settled in the area building churches and chapels with colorful ikonic paintings on the walls. The area is on the Unesco Heritage List. We will visit them. There are many underground cities in Cappadocia some of them open to the public visit still some remain undiscovered to the end and are thought to have connections among them. We will go into them.
There is no such abundance of secrets in any place on the whole planet. And although many of them have been answered there is something mysterious in Cappadocia that attracts travellers from all over the world.
In one of our grape gardens near our town Avanos, there were two big fairy chimneys, my grandparents had made a room by carving into the rock, and we used it when we were there. Like in many other places.
Become a part of that fascinating history, walk through the amazing valleys, and fall in love with Cappadocia as your own home. And she will reciprocate to be vivid on your long unforgettable memories.
Travel Program
DAY 1
Early in the morning, we come to pick you up from your place with a comfortable A/C bus, a professional guide, and a driver. And start for a journey towards the Taurus Mountains; at the very beginning, we start differing from other tour programs. They go on a conventional motorway, we go on an alternative route through local towns Bozkır, Karaman, Bor, Niğde. We take breaks at local interesting nomad locations. For instance, at one of them, there is an old traditional mill working with running water that grounds sesame to produce tahini to make halvah, a traditional Turkish sweet.
As we carry on after Niğde town, we reach Cappadocia Triangle. The first location to discover is the Derinkuyu Underground City. One of the biggest in Cappadocia. Going down to the underground city, people might will be feeling delighted, confused, fearful, and humid. Any feeling is possible, after all, few people managed to face life without sunlight. Here you will see premises for personal and household needs with all amenities. Faith has become one of the best postulates in the dungeons; that’s why at a depth several meters below the surface, you can also see churches and chapels; this is how people managed to carry the teachings of Christ through the ages.
After the underground visit, we go to see Uçhisar Kalesi. It is a town built on one of the highest hilltops in the area which has a picturesque panorama view of Cappadocia, therefore an ideal spot for fantastic pictures.
At the end of the day we reach our fabulous Hitite-style built Cave Hotel which will be our home for 3 nights. Dinner is served which consists of authentic Cappadocian dishes and famous local brew wine from the nearby vineyards.

Adrenaline lovers must get up early at 5.00 am to witness the fantastic Cappadocia sunrise and if voluntarily for one of life’s most thrilling and breathtaking adventures; they must get on board the hot-air balloon to fly over the hills and valleys full of fairy chimneys for 2 hours. After the ceremony at the end of the flight, we return to our hotel for a freshly prepared tasty breakfast.
Today’s explorations are local old settlements like Mustafapaşa, Yeşilöz, Soğanlı, and similarly. At these locations we discover the Orthodox and Catholic churches; at the moment not open to public visit. Conventional tours never see these places either because they have no idea or do not have enough time. These locations make up real Cappadocia. Along these visits, we also come across beautiful fields, farms, and gardens with grapes, fruits, and various organic products.
We taste local food and drinks along the way and visit some workshops making handmade items. The area is well known for these manufactures. Returning to our hotel delicious Cappadocian dinner is served.

Churches are Tokalı, Yılanlı, Sandalet, Elmalı, and lately discovered Karanlık with very well-preserved freaks. They are registered with Unesco World Heritage
Day 4
On our last day in the area after breakfast, we visit interesting locations Çavuşin, Zelve, Devrent, and a beautiful town Avanos by the Kızılırmak River. Avanos has developed to become an easy-living Citta-Slow town. We have our delicious lunch at a restaurant by the river. River Kızılırmak brings fine red soil and clay which are deposited along its banks. They become a perfect material for pottery. From antique Hittite times, this handcraft is practiced to make many different forms of pottery. So it is a good idea to pay a visit to a such workshop to see the making of pottery, possibly to try to do it.
Return Journey
On our way back we stop at Tepesidelik Han and Sultanhanı. They are inns on the Silk Road, for traveling caravans as resting facilities, which played important roles in old times.
Mevlana in Konya
